Geochromatic Parcel

A cadastral map is a true-to-scale representation of all parcels of land in an area and contains information on boundaries, numbers, location, development, roads, waterways and land use.

A parcel of land is a man-made section of the earth’s surface – clearly defined, numbered and administered. What it obscures are the processes that create and permeate this place: growth and movement, ecological connectedness, cycles and exchanges between living beings, soil, air and landscape. The work therefore understands the place not as a fixed entity, but as a mosaic of influences in which human and non-human participants are equally effective.

The fabric cartography translates the plants found on site and the colors extracted from them into a sewn fabric collage bearing the image of the site-specific field map.

Just as every plant contains the elemental qualities of earth, water, air and fire, these qualities are required for the dyeing process: minerals are added through mordanting; water and heat dissolve the dye; the colour becomes visible when dried in air. The plant bears traces of its place of growth – soil, water, sunlight, nutrients and air quality shape the colours produced.

Authorship is therefore shared among humans, plants, soil and weather.
